In our environment, we are unfortunately facing problems of pollution detrimental to many populations. One of these problems is land littering which can harm the greenery that is around us every day. These harmful effects of littering can kill animals and plants, attract dangerous bacteria, attract vermin, start fires, and cause accidents on the road. Furthermore, trash dumped by those oblivious to the issue can accumulate in our public areas and cause an unsightly appearance which could potentially drive people out of certain areas, reducing revenue for local businesses.

The existing solutions to this problem are inconvenient, time-consuming, and expensive; for example, there are land cleanup programs that require hundreds of volunteers in order to pick up trash. The problem with this solution is that it desires people who want and have time to make a difference in the world. This would be a difficult task to accomplish and may end up wasting precious manhours. Additionally, another existing solution to the littering problems is another environmental vacuum; however, these vacuum services are primarily for concentrated areas of waste. These vacuum services are large trucks equipped with vacuums and hoses to clean up large quantities of waste.

Currently, cleaning up parks and environments are mostly done by humans. ASTRO will change this by automating the cleaning up process to reduce the need for manual labor. This will make cleaning parks more efficient and effective. The ASTRO is an autonomous environmental vacuum that utilizes suction tubes and arms in order to pick up trash harmful to our environment. The initials stand for an Auto Sensory Trash Retrieval Organizer that uses biosensors in order to distinguish between trash or life.
